» PAST; Margaret and David Schiff welcomed baby Juliet Mackenzie into their family of three on a sunny June morning, fit for the beautiful baby girl. Juliet was a happy baby like her brother Aaron, three years her elder, and never fussed much -- she was always a bit quiter than Aaron. They grew up in a house on the beach; something that the kid's parents found a nuisance when their sandy toddlers would track the sand all over the house, but it worked out well for them, anyway. She grew up building sand castles, playing volleyball, Frisbee, boogie boarding, you name it. She was, of course, taught to swim at an early age and soon thereafter learned how to surf, just like her brother. Aaron was always the one with the inclination to sport, though. Whereas he turned to arts later in life, Juliet was always the artistic one.
But one day when Juliet was ten, her whole family was in Hawaii for a surf competition her father was in. A storm was brewing, but the competition went on, of course. David got in one ride; it was also his last. He got sucked under the wave when he judged it wrong, and the mistake turned fatal when his head smacked on the reef. They tried to revive him at a nearby hospital, but he was gone.
It was awful, being ten and losing your father. Juliet watched as her only thirteen year old brother tried to play man of the house, while her mother feel to pieces. Juliet was, of course, also devestated by the event. It was hard to not have a father figure, as well as a mother who was suffering serious heartbreak. For years and years, Juliet and Aaron would both stay up with their mother until odd hours of the evening, drinking tea or coffee.. sometimes they laughed, but more often, they mourned their father's untimely death. Juliet reverted farther into the arts, taking up photography. She became more serious about her singing and song writing. She spent hours outside with her camrea, though parts of her could no longer bare to be at the beach. Atleast, she would remind herself, there were beautiful sunrises and sunsets. She sketched, somtimes: wrote poetry, short stories, anything to keep her mind off it. Though for a while she had wanted to be a journalist, when Aaron took her to the SBR studios after he was signed, she met the other girls in Miss Mirror. They needed a guitarist and she was a prime candidate; she signed with the label and never looked back.
